PPK aerial survey using VTOL (Pixhawk-based) is not difficult [1. Get the equipment ready]

Today, as the first start, we will prepare the equipment to be used for aerial  surveying and introduce the composition principle.


We will introduce a method of extracting cheap but high-quality data that can be used for air surveying by applying fixhawk to THIRDEYE JI-HOV2 (4+1) and introduce the process of applying equipment along with VTOL aircraft through posts.

Since 2018, our team has used various equipment to verify performance to obtain high-precision aviation data, and we have found the method that is most used for high-quality aerial surveying worldwide.


It is a PPK-based post-processing drone mapping.


Due to the nature of the fixed wing, the real-time connection between the RTK-based base and the Rover is difficult to continue due to the limitations of communication equipment. As a result, the quality of the data coordinate values decreases. 


The alternative is not the real-time communication between base and rover, but the same-time base RTK and rover RTK equipment store GNSS log data and post-process the two GNSS data based on each backed up data after the flight is completed. Post-processing is a method of reducing the precision error of coordinates based on two GNSS logs.

VTOL or fixed-wing aerial surveying is based on this method to date.


Now, let me introduce how to set up the equipment.


KEYPOINT 1. 

We do not connect the RTK GNSS to VTOL (i.e. to PIXHAWK) for accurate aerial measurement. That is, you don't have to make redundant investments.



The method we propose is the concept of configuring the VTOL drone separately from the equipment that acquires aerial survey data.


VTOL's incoming GPS uses the basic GPS to select and utilize the device system at a reasonable price.


In other words, drones only need to complete a stable setting to fly on a planned Waypoint basis.


When planning a mission, overlapping pictures are important. This part will be conveyed through an introduction to the future mission plan.


Because of the nature of the flight, the fixed wing is very stable to fly in a straight line (refer to the problem in extreme conditions with high gusts in many directions)


Therefore, if you set the Waypoint and overlap well, you can fly stably on the desired flight path, and if you follow the instructions to get the data from the camera well


The VTOL setting is over.


KEYPOINT 2. 

During the VTOL Waypoint mission, equipment that stores RTK GNSS coordinate values without latency (delay) should be utilized when giving commands from the camera.

China's drone FC and RTK GNSS manufacturers have no understanding of shutter-ring latency arising from drone mapping. (Recently developed solutions for the CUAV family)


In the shutter ring, if there is a delay in the picture and coordinate in the sink, that is, there is an error in the coordinate value.



To reduce this, EMLID Mapping KIT supports RTK Rover equipment with a camera-connected hot shoe.

The principle of reducing the latency of Hotshoe is as follows.

The camera's hotshoe is designed to work with the same pairing with the camera's shutter.


Based on this, if you give the camera's command from the drone, the camera's shutter works.


  In EMLID products, coordinate log data is stored by passing the same command from Hotshoe to EMLID products at the same time that the camera's shutter operates.


his method acquires the optimal survey coordinate value for the aerial survey.


EMLID MAPPING KIT consists of REACH M2 and REACH RS2+ products.

The REACH RS2+ product is used for ground surveying, which is inexpensive, but has performance similar to that of other survey base equipment, making it extremely reasonable to approach. 


Also, I think it is very easy to use because the related software is well organized and the documents are well organized in the studio that controls and processes through the app.
